Campfire Cocoa

Camping_Kitchen_Hot_Chocolate_postYes, your local super market has at least a dozen tasty hot chocolate mixes to choose from. However, we guarantee they don’t pack the depth of flavor that our Campfire Cocoa does. What’s the secret? A quality cocoa (we used Ghiradelli premium natural unsweetened cocoa) and pinch of cayenne. Pre-mixing a batch at home, means you only need fresh milk once you arrive at your campsite. Store it in a sealed mason jar, in your camp box, and it should stay good for a year.

2 1/2 cups cocoa
3 cups organic cane sugar (or Sucanat)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon cayenne

In a large bowl, combine the cocoa, sugar, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and cayenne. Mix well and store in an airtight container. A glass mason jar will do nicely.

Heat the milk up in a saucepan on a camp stove or on a grill grate over a low campfire. Add 2 tablespoons of the cocoa mix per 1 cup of milk. Be careful not to let the milk boil. Add the mix in slowly as the milk heats up.
